Diesel Engine Assistants support the engine driver (train driver) during diesel locomotive operations, handling engine performance monitoring, fuel and lubricating oil management, and regular inspections and maintenance tasks. Before departure, they check filters and cooling water, inspect instruments, and report and address detected abnormalities. During operation, they assist with monitoring pressure and temperature gauges in the cab and operating fuel supply devices, and after operation, they perform cleaning and record-keeping tasks. They work in harsh environments such as noisy and vibrating engine rooms and outdoor shift work, complying with safety regulations while cooperating as a team.

Future Outlook

Due to the expansion of electrified lines, the number of workers is on a decreasing trend, but steady demand continues in non-electrified sections such as tourist routes. Expertise as maintenance and upgrade technicians is required.
