Description

Deck hands handle mooring operations, loading and unloading cargo, rope work, operation of deck machinery, and maintenance inspections such as painting and cleaning on the decks of ships in maritime transport. They also play important roles in supporting ship operational safety, including inspections and training with lifeboats and fire-fighting equipment, and preparation of navigation instruments. Physical strength, teamwork, and situational judgment are required as they work together as a team even during long voyages or harsh weather conditions.

Demand for maritime transport will continue in the future, but with advances in unmanned and automation technologies, the role of deck crew may consolidate.
