Summary

A profession that processes copper plates and copper wires to produce utensils and decorative items. Performs processes such as hammering, welding, and polishing using traditional techniques.

Description

Copper craftsmen are artisans who use copper plates and copper wires as materials to create utensils and decorative items. They read blueprints, cut copper plates of appropriate thickness, and shape them by hammering (repoussé and stretching). As needed, they perform annealing and join parts with brazing (soldering). They finish the surface by polishing, plating, and patina treatment. They also handle products incorporating decorative techniques such as chasing and inlay, and are active in various fields including tea ceremony utensils, lighting fixtures, architectural decorative panels, and Buddhist altar fittings. They are required to inherit traditional techniques and apply new materials and new techniques.

Future Outlook

Artisans with advanced manual skills are rare, and while steady job openings are expected due to continued demand for traditional crafts and interior design, the shortage of successors remains a challenge.
