Classification

Summary

A profession that processes timber into bent hoops or staves, assembles them with iron hoops or fasteners, and manufactures leak-proof oke (wooden tubs) and barrels.

Description

The hoop fitter softens timber with steam or hot water to form circular bent hoops, performs mortise processing on staves (straight-grained boards), and assembles them. They fit iron hoops or tightening ropes onto the assembled body and insert the bottom board to complete oke or barrels. This is a traditional woodworking craft where water resistance and durability suited to uses such as drinking water, sake, miso, pickles, etc., are required, and dimensional accuracy and gap-free assembly techniques are essential.

Future Outlook

While the number of craftsmen is declining due to aging population and successor shortages, the added value as traditional crafts and demand for souvenirs remain strong, with the market progressing steadily. Introducing new technologies to improve production efficiency and design will be key in the future.
