Classification

Summary

Concrete pipe pipelayers lay concrete pipes in roads or underground and perform piping work for water supply/drainage and sewer facilities. They handle excavation, pipeline installation, joint connection work, leak repair, etc.

Description

Concrete pipe pipelayers install water supply/drainage and sewer concrete pipes on site, accurately joining and fixing them. First, they excavate the ground based on construction drawings to secure the piping route. They bring in pipe materials such as concrete pipes and PVC pipes, and perform joint work using adhesives, rubber packings, or welding. They also conduct leak and clog inspections/repairs, in-pipe camera inspections, soil quality surveys, level checks, and installation of safety shoring. Required skills include operating heavy machinery, handling surveying equipment, measures against hazardous gases such as oxygen deficiency and hydrogen sulfide, and coordinated teamwork.

Future Outlook

Demand for new installation and renewal of sewerage and water supply/drainage pipes is increasing due to aging public infrastructure countermeasures and urban development, with stable job openings expected. Shortage of skilled technicians is a challenge.
