Carborundum Manufacturing Worker

Industry & Occupation
Classification
Summary
A job that manufactures silicon carbide (carborundum) using electric furnaces or kilns and produces raw materials such as abrasives and refractory materials.
Description
Carborundum manufacturing workers mix high-purity silicon sources (sand) and carbon sources (petroleum coke, etc.), which are raw materials for silicon carbide, and heat them to high temperatures (approximately 2300–2500°C) in an electric resistance heating furnace to synthesize via chemical reaction (Acheson process). After synthesis, they cool, crush and pulverize the lumps, classify them to adjust particle size, and produce products suitable for uses such as abrasives and refractory materials. In the manufacturing process, safety management and quality control are important under working environments with high temperatures, dust, and noise. They also handle tasks such as equipment inspection and maintenance, fine adjustment of manufacturing conditions, and process improvements.
Future Outlook
Demand for silicon carbide is expected to remain stable in abrasives, refractory materials, semiconductor and electric vehicle components, etc., and expectations for manufacturing technicians will increase with the development of high-performance, high-value-added products.
