Summary

Barge captains are responsible for the operation and management of non-powered vessels (barges) towed by tugboats, including cargo loading and securing, mooring, safety monitoring during navigation, and crew instruction.

Description

Barge captains handle cargo loading and securing on deck when transporting engine-less barges by tugboats or pusher boats, supervise cargo handling operations, perform mooring and berthing/unberthing with rope work, inspect and use safety equipment, and check weather and tidal current information. They also adjust towing speed and routes through signals or communications with the tugboat, and upon arrival, direct and supervise unloading operations and cleanup. Guiding the crew and safety management are key roles.

From the perspective of decarbonization, maritime and inland waterway transport as alternatives to truck transport is gaining attention, and demand for barge captains is expected to remain stable.
