Sheet Metal Hoop Worker

Industry & Occupation

Engineering & Manufacturing

Classification

Summary

Sheet metal workers (excluding automobiles) cut, bend, and form metal sheets, performing welding and finishing processes to manufacture construction members, containers, signs, machine parts, etc.

Description

Sheet metal workers (excluding automobiles) cut steel sheets, aluminum sheets, and other metal sheets to prescribed shapes using presses, laser cutters, shears, and other cutting machines; bend them using benders or rollers; and join them by welding or brazing. For finishing, they use grinders or sanders for deburring and surface polishing, and may apply painting or rustproofing. They plan processing sequences based on drawings or CAD designs, ensure dimensional accuracy and surface quality, and perform work using safety devices and protective gear. In addition to handling diverse products in factories, on-site locations, and contract shops inside and outside the factory, they manage production on manufacturing lines and coordinate with subsequent processes.

Future Outlook

Amid a severe labor shortage due to declining birthrates and aging population, demand for sheet metal processing remains stable. While CAD/CAM and robotic processing are proliferating, the need for skilled artisans with advanced manual finishing techniques remains high. By acquiring digital transformation (DX) skills and control technologies, one can become high-value-added talent.
