Summary
A profession that operates meteorological observation equipment at airports and airfields to obtain weather information necessary for aircraft operations, collects, analyzes, and reports data.
Description
Aviation weather observers operate and inspect meteorological observation equipment such as anemometers, barometers, rain gauges, visibility meters, and all-sky cameras at airports, etc., and record and analyze data obtained from manual and automatic observation devices. They report observation data in METAR or TAF formats and provide it to air traffic controllers and pilots. They perform emergency observations in response to weather changes, and also handle fault detection and maintenance tasks. Outdoor work and 24-hour shift work are required.
Future Outlook
While automation of operations is advancing with the introduction of automatic observation systems and AI analysis technologies, human observations of visibility and cloud cover will continue to be important, and the demand for observers with advanced expertise is expected to be maintained.
