Industry & Occupation
Classification
Summary
Plant operation technician who operates, monitors, and controls ammonia synthesis equipment using the Haber-Bosch process with natural gas, etc. as raw materials.
Description
Ammonia synthesis operators handle the operation of ammonia synthesis plants based on the Haber-Bosch process. They monitor process parameters such as temperature, pressure, and gas composition inside the reactor using DCS and instrumentation equipment, and maintain optimal reaction conditions by operating valves and pumps. They adjust the mixing ratio and flow rate of raw material gases, perform sampling and analysis to confirm catalyst activity, detect abnormalities through routine inspections, execute startup and shutdown procedures, manage safety, and handle exhaust gas treatment. In the event of trouble, they implement emergency responses, investigate causes, and work on restoration. Shift work is common, including night shifts and on-call duties on holidays.
Future Outlook
Ammonia has high demand as a raw material for fertilizers and chemical products, and the demand for operators of conventional Haber-Bosch process plants is expected to remain stable. On the other hand, as new process developments such as decarbonization technologies and electrocatalytic methods advance, the ability to adapt to the latest technologies and know-how in energy efficiency improvement will be required.
