Industry & Occupation
Classification
Summary
A job that manufactures activated carbon as an adsorbent by carbonizing and activating raw materials such as woody charcoal materials or coconut shells at high temperatures.
Description
Activated carbon manufacturing workers are technicians who carbonize organic materials such as woody raw materials or nut shells at approximately 600–900°C, and further perform activation processing using steam, carbon dioxide, or chemical agents to increase surface area. They control raw material supply, temperature and pressure management of the firing furnace, settings for chemical activation conditions, and cooling, washing, and drying processes, and after pulverization and granulation, conduct quality inspections such as iodine adsorption value and pH. They also handle equipment maintenance inspections, safety and health management, and creation of process records, stably producing products that comply with environmental regulations and quality standards.
Future Outlook
Demand remains stable due to applications in water treatment and deodorization, and strengthening of environmental regulations. Needs are tending to increase with expanded applications in automotive exhaust gas purification filters and energy storage materials. Development of energy-saving manufacturing and sustainable production methods using biomass raw materials is progressing, and demand for specialized technicians is expected to grow.
